OUR CHURCH

A brief history of St Mary's

"The most exciting

14th Century decorated church in Norfolk"

Nikolaus Pevsner

St Mary's church with its 175 foot tall tower and spire, sits on high ground above the village of Snettisham, West Norfolk, and was often a landmark for mariners navigating The Wash.

The present church was built in 1340, but a previous church existed and Snettisham village was built around it. The Black Death sadly destroyed the original village.

St Mary's church was regarded by architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner as the best "decorated" church in East Anglia. Its stone spire, soaring 175 feet, is a rarity in Norfolk, with only the Cathedral and three other churches having one.

The stained-glass windows alone are spectacular with an equally impressive Medieval pulpit and eagle lectern. Various hatchments decorate the vestry and, for such a small Norfolk village, St Mary's dominates the skyline.

As well as being a centre for Christian worship for over 700 years, the church provides a safe haven from the busyness of 21st Century life - and regularly holds concerts, recitals and other events which attract both church and village alike.

ST.MARY'S NEWS

Easter was full of life and energy at St Mary’s. We had a fantastic visit from the primary school to talk about the meaning of Easter. On Maundy Thursday we gathered for a supper in the church, where around 30 people enjoyed a meal of roast lamb, tabouli and flatbread, followed by a candlelit time of reflection as the altar was stripped ahead of Good Friday.

Easter Sunday was another joyful celebration, with over 100 people joining together in church to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection.

More generally, our regular Sunday has continued to be a source of nourishment and joy to increasing numbers of people, seeking the depth and richness of life in Christ.

WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON AT ST.MARY'S?

We have finally installed our new porch at the main west door! This has been years in the making. The old wooden porch was in poor condition, and blocked the view and access into the church. The new porch, with its glass doors and beautiful oak arch, is both inviting and accessible. Pop in for a look sometime!

The Craft Corner has been expanded to include a dedicated space for children under 5 years old, with age-appropriate resources. This is available to use every day, and is a great place to cool off in the hot weather.

COMING SOON AT ST.MARY'S

2nd & 3rd August - The Art & Craft Fair

The annual Art and Craft Fair returns for 2025, where local artists and makers will exhibit their pieces. Much of  the work will be available to buy, and refreshments will be served throughout.

3rd August - 'Taking Flight' Serenata Ladies Voices

On Sunday 3rd August, at 7pm, we will host a performance by Serenata, a choir of around 25 ladies from around the eastern counties. Here’s some info about the performance:

‘Taking Flight’ an evening with Serenata Female Voices

The theme of ‘Taking Flight’ for our Summer Concert arose from a chance remark about ‘letting the choir fly’. Research into the repertoire revealed a rich seam of musical and poetic gems. Our chosen programme celebrates many aspects of flight - from mankind’s bold adventures in aeroplanes and rockets, to soaring flights of birds, buzzing of bees and fluttering butterflies. We take metaphorical flights of fancy, through hope and love, and flights of passage as we grow from child to adulthood.

Join us as we celebrate flight through inspiring words and music of poets and composers past and present. To name a few highlights: we will soar into the blue yonder with Stanford’s Bluebird, ask a Skylark for advice on love (Hoagy Carmichael / Johnny Mercer), hear the Beatles’ Blackbird singing in the dead of night and hold our breath as a fledgling Robin braves its first flight from the safety of the nest. Together we’ll travel to the moon and stars, fly across the ethereal beauty of the Arctic Tundra (through Ola Gjeilo’s dramatic imagery), and experience the power and beauty of Emily Dickinson’s ‘Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul’, in a contemporary musical setting.

Serenata female voices is a choir of experienced singers, drawn from across the East of England, who perform music arranged for three or more female voice parts; the choir is directed by Andrew Foxley. Serenata’s music includes a wide variety of pieces and genres drawn from the 12th century up to the present day; we are also delighted to perform pieces by local composers.

9th August - Erin Elizaa

On 9th August, at 7pm, we are thrilled to welcome Erin Elizaa back to perform at St Mary’s. East Anglian singer-songwriter Erin Elizaa is an 21 year old acoustic folk pop musician, combining soft toned vocals with sweet sounding acoustic guitar. Finding inspiration in nostalgia, the passing of time and past experiences in relationships, make for an interesting perspective in her lyrics and songwriting.

Tickets available on the door.

SUPPERS & LUNCHES

Thursdays and Fridays

We continue to host shared meals, cleverly named Thursday Suppers (7pm at Park Farm Visitor’s Centre) and Friday Lunches (12:30pm at the Church Hall, Station Rd).

These gatherings are a great opportunity to meet new people and also include some light teaching and discussion of Christian life. These are free events, and any donations made will go to support the Hunstanton & District Food Bank (we’ve raised over £4,000 for this local cause). Everyone is welcome!

SUNDAY WORSHIP

Our Sunday Services at St Mary's start at 10am

These are very relaxed and accessible services for everyone, and the regular congregation are always welcoming and friendly.

We also now have an Activity Space for Children and creative types to use during services.

Everyone who’s been Christened is welcome to come forward for bread and wine at Holy Communion or for a simple blessing if you’d prefer. Or you don’t have to come forward at all if you don’t want to! We’re also happy to bring the bread and wine to you if it’s difficult for you to get up to the front of the church.

Morning Worship is a regular church service but without Holy Communion. Tea, coffee and cakes are served after every service!

We have also added an extra BCP Holy Communion service to each month, held at 8.30am on the first and third

We also meet for Coffee & Prayers on Friday mornings from 9.30am. Some come along and chatter away, and others sit quietly and enjoy praying with others in their own way.
